Rush Reviews & Rough Edit

In order to prepare for editing the final Transmedia Piece, Anastasija, Sara and I had a meeting to go over the rushes and assess which scenes are the most suitable for each part of the film. The process itself was unexpectedly lengthy due to the retakes of certain scenes, which meant we had to split the rush reviews into two meetings - one before and one after Christmas.

Each used their own method of marking the usable scenes - mine can be seen below:

As I was assisting Anastasija with the edit, I was the first to work on the rough cut and make note of which scenes required what edits to be made. While editing, I kept in mind the role of our sound designers and made visual notes of where they would need to come in and help with foley or soundscapes.
Ideally, the edits would have been done seamlessly and collaboratively in a shared space but as the other deadlines, crew flying home and COVID stopped us from editing together, we attempted to do so via sharing our project files. As Anastasija may discuss in her blog, there were several errors we had to try and fix when working remotely on the same project file. Firstly, converting the Premiere Pro file I was using to an XML for Anastasija made the proxy workflow I set up a lot more disorganised in the Final Cut Pro version - with scenes or audio missing which Anastasija had to replace. Secondly, as someone that has edited in person with directors before this module, it is immensely more difficult to communicate and replicate the vision of the director when there is the online barrier present.

Being able to take part in the editing process as someone in the Production Design pathway, however, is fairly rewarding as I was able to spot continuity errors (though we had no time to reshoot) and assess how framing a shot to expose the background/set dressing can impact the narrative. Below is my rough cut which was then handed over to Anastasija for further edits:
